Build and configure a server

Create a database cluster, start and stop it with pg_ctl, and tune postgresql.conf.

Lock down access

Set up roles and privileges, and control who can connect in pg_hba.conf.

Back up and restore

Take logical and physical backups, then recover a database to a point in time.

Set up high availability

Build a streaming replica, switch over and promote it, and configure automatic failover.

Tune slow queries

Read EXPLAIN ANALYZE output, add the right index and update planner statistics.

Keep it healthy

Schedule VACUUM and ANALYZE, prevent transaction ID wraparound and monitor locks.

PostgreSQL DBA syllabus for the online course

There are 18 parts, taken from our downloadable curriculum. Each one is taught live, and you practise it on a real PostgreSQL server before you move on.

Parts 1–2

Inside PostgreSQL

01 Introduction. A short history, the major and newer features, multi-version concurrency control, write-ahead logging and the system's limits.
02 Architecture. How shared memory, utility processes, read and write buffering, commits and checkpoints work, and how data is laid out on disk.

Parts 3–4

Setting up a server

03 Installation. Preparing the OS user, installing PostgreSQL, setting environment variables, creating a cluster, using pg_ctl and connecting through psql and pgAdmin.
04 Configuration. Parameters for connections, security, memory, the planner, WAL, logs, the background writer, vacuum cost and autovacuum.

Parts 5–8

Objects, users and access

05 Databases and users. Databases, schemas and the search path, tablespaces, and roles, users and groups.
06 The data dictionary. Querying the system catalog, information views and system functions.
07 Working in pgAdmin. Registering servers and handling databases, schemas and indexes through the query tool.
08 Security. Levels of security, authentication in pg_hba.conf, ownership, privileges and application access settings.

Parts 9–12

Backups, maintenance and concurrency

09 Backup and recovery. Dumps with pg_dump, pg_dumpall and pg_restore, offline copies, continuous archiving, pg_basebackup, pgBackRest, Barman and point-in-time recovery.
10 Routine maintenance. EXPLAIN ANALYZE, table and planner statistics, vacuuming and autovacuum, wraparound prevention, the visibility map and reindexing.
11 Moving data. Bulk loading and exporting with COPY.
12 Transactions. Isolation levels, the effects of concurrency, and MVCC in practice, including wraparound and maintenance.

Parts 13–15

Tuning, replication and partitioning

13 Performance tuning. Hardware, OS and parameter tuning, planner memory and WAL settings, explain plans, index usage and loading large data sets quickly.
14 Replication and failover. Planning for data loss, setting up streaming replication, switchover and promotion with repmgr, automatic failover with repmgrd, Patroni, and fixing replication lag.
15 Partitioning. Partitioning methods, when partitioning helps, setup and constraint exclusion.

Parts 16–18

Upgrades, monitoring and tools

16 Upgrades and migration. Upgrade methods and migrating an Oracle database to PostgreSQL.
17 Monitoring. Statistics tables, OS processes, sessions and locks, slow-query logs and disk usage.
18 The DBA toolkit. Practical sessions on pgBadger, pgBouncer, Pgpool-II, repmgr, ora2pg, Barman, pgBackRest and Patroni.

Yes, it's live online. Aalok Institute doesn't have a centre in Pune, so Pune students join our live, instructor-led batches online. Our head office and classroom are in Vashi, Navi Mumbai.

Can I do the course while working in Hinjewadi or Kharadi?

Yes. There are early-morning, daytime and evening batches on weekdays, and weekend batches from 10 am to 7 pm, all in IST. Pick the slot that fits around your shift.

The course is 40+ hours. Regular batches meet for two or three hours a session, and the weekday fast-track meets for three hours a day, so you finish sooner.
