The syllabus follows our downloadable PostgreSQL curriculum. It starts with how PostgreSQL works inside, moves through installation, security, backup and maintenance, and finishes with tuning, high availability and the tools DBAs use every day.

Parts 1–2

PostgreSQL fundamentals and architecture

01 Introduction. Where PostgreSQL came from, its major and newer features, multi-version concurrency control (MVCC), write-ahead logging (WAL) and its limits.
02 System architecture. Shared memory, statement processing, utility processes, read and write buffering, the background writer, commits and checkpoints, and the data directory and page layout.

Parts 3–4

Installation and configuration

03 Installation. The OS user and permissions, environment variables, creating a database cluster, starting and stopping it with pg_ctl, and connecting with psql and pgAdmin.
04 Configuration. Setting parameters for connections, authentication, memory, the query planner, WAL, logging, the background writer and autovacuum.

Parts 5–8

Databases, users and security

05 Databases and schemas. The object hierarchy, creating databases, schemas and tablespaces, the schema search path, and roles, users and groups.
06 Data dictionary. The system catalog schema, system information views and tables, and system information functions.
07 pgAdmin. Registering a server and managing databases, schemas and indexes with the query tool.
08 Security basics. Authentication and authorisation, the pg_hba.conf file, object ownership, access control and application access parameters.

Parts 9–12

Backup, recovery and maintenance

09 Backup and point-in-time recovery. pg_dump, pg_dumpall and pg_restore, offline copies, continuous archiving, pg_basebackup, pgBackRest, Barman and point-in-time recovery.
10 Routine maintenance. EXPLAIN and EXPLAIN ANALYZE, planner statistics, VACUUM and autovacuum scheduling, preventing transaction ID wraparound, the visibility map and reindexing.
11 Moving data. Loading and unloading data with the COPY command.
12 Transactions and concurrency. Isolation levels, how MVCC works, internal identifiers, wraparound and MVCC maintenance, with a live demo.

Parts 13–15

Performance, high availability and partitioning

13 Performance tuning. Hardware, OS and server parameter tuning, memory and WAL settings, reading explain plans, statistics, index usage and loading large amounts of data quickly.
14 Replication and failover. High availability options, hot streaming replication, switchover and promotion with repmgr, automatic failover with repmgrd, a Patroni HA setup and troubleshooting replication lag.
15 Table partitioning. Partitioning methods, when to partition, setup, constraint exclusion and caveats.

Upgrades, monitoring and DBA tools

16 Upgrades and migration. Upgrade methods, including pg_dump and pg_restore, and migrating from Oracle to PostgreSQL.
17 Database monitoring. The statistics collector and statistics tables, OS process monitoring, current sessions and locks, slow-query logging and disk usage.
